ZAPP dance company is no stranger to innovation. They are Eugene's original hip-hop company and have been performing locally and around the world since 1989. Company director Cindy Zreliak and her dancers, both past and present, have helped shape the local dance community as we know it today.
"Through the Lens" may be one of their most elaborate and innovative projects to date.
The idea of a dance "concept" video is simple. Incorporate a theme, story and location into dance choreography. ZAPP has taken this idea to the next level. They have filmed numerous hip-hop and lyrical dance concept videos over the course of 9 months and edited these segments together into a feature length film.
Each video segment involved months of pre-planning, location scouting and story development. And all of that happened before the first count of choreography was laid down.
This project differs from a typical live dance show in that the dancers and choreographers are not bound by the limited dimensions of a stage, but only by imagination. This is a new experience for both the audience and the dancers.
ZAPP is believed to be the first dance studio to undertake a project of this type and magnitude. This movie was filmed in Lane County and around Oregon, and includes footage shot in locations such as Peacehealth Sacred Heart - University District Hospital and the Oregon Air & Space Museum, just to name a few. "Through The Lens" features guest appearances from other local dance companies including The Dance Factory, WORK, and Dance Northwest, and is intended to be appropriate for all ages. |
